Pharaoh's Mystery Review
Published: May 25, 2006 Howard Carter unsealed the burial chamber of Tutankhamen with shovels and pickaxes. He didn't mention solving color-based puzzles. Maybe there wasn't enough gold left in the royal coffers after King Tut's father broke the bank with the mystical brainteasers you'll have to crack before plundering his tomb in Alawar Entertainment's Pharaoh's Mystery. The game is a cross between a match-three offering and Breakout. As colored glyphs drop down from the top of the screen in rows, your job is to shoot them with scarab-shaped projectiles using a mouse-controlled paddle. You can only destroy matching glyphs in groups of three or more. The larger the group you zap, the more gold coins rain down from above for you to catch. Shooting less than three glyphs turns them into stones which can only be removed by hitting nearby bombs or catching a special powerup. If the encroaching glyphs reach the bottom of the screen, you lose. You defeat each level by collecting enough coins. Visually, Pharaoh's Mysteries excels. Smooth animations, good explosions and well-rendered backgrounds convey the Egyptian theme throughout. The gameplay elements also come together to make an engaging experience, although after the first three stages, the difficulty increases substantially.
