Ball Attack from Archgames is one of the best-kept secrets in Breakout games. A two-dimensional contribution to the prolific brick-busting genre, it features 180 levels stocked with cool powerups, weapons and explosions, as well as some of the smoothest ball and bat mechanics this side of the original Arkanoid.

The best part of Ball Attack, though, is its clever level design. Many stages come with powerup generators that spit out useful items when you hit them with a ball. One of the demo levels contains three generators, one of which provides a chaingun with limited ammunition. The other two drop a bonus that rotates the level 180 degrees, giving you access to new bricks. On a later level, you must hit the tip of a bomb to detonate all of the bricks. Ball Attack requires skill, but also draws you forward in anticipation of what's next.

Ball Attack's one downside is its graphics, which are crisp and professional, but draw from a limited number of colors and lack attractive backgrounds. The compelling and bountiful gameplay, however, more than make up for the somewhat dull visuals. If you've grown tired of Breakout games, Ball Attack just might revive your passion.

Kudos has to be given to GoGii for tackling a unique theme instead of piggy-backing a concept that's already been done.
