Boom Voyage Review
Published: October 22, 2006 What is it about Ancient Egypt? So many games take place there. Not that Boom Voyage from Kraisoft suffers from this setting. Far from it. This is one Breakout clone that benefits from the trappings of pyramids, pharaohs and aliens. Yes, aliens. What, you don't believe King Tut was in cahoots with little green men? Don't worry; in this game, they're your friend. In fact, they'll even zap bricks for you sometimes. Not that the excellent array powerups makes it necessary. Fireballs, missiles, nukes, machineguns, buzzsaws and more clear away each level quite nicely. I find it quite rare for a game to be cute without being saccharine-sweet. Boom Voyage, however, manages to strike the perfect balance. The levels are clever, the power-ups cartoony and the subtle use of physics was an unexpected surprise. With the exception of some graphical issues (such as a slight graininess to the 3D) and a muzak-style soundtrack that's entirely too generic, I'd say this is the best Arkanoid game since Ricochet. Highly recommended! Scoring (out of five dragon heads): Graphics: Ease of use: Gameplay: Difficulty: Sound effects: Music: Final analysis: |
