Bugatron Worlds Review
Published: September 5, 2006 Retro64 made a name for itself several years ago with the release of Bugatron, a Galaga-style space shooter with a cool retro vibe humming beneath its 3D accelerated gloss. At a time when retail games were becoming more and more bloated, Bugatron reminded us that good games could still come in small packages. So how does Bugatron Worlds stack up? Fans of the original will note the sequel is easier. This is an observation, not a criticism. Just like the first game, though, Bugatron Worlds is packed with creatively designed levels in which various creepy-crawlies swoop and swirl across the screen, dropping bombs at your small ship. Fortunately, you can catch weapon enhancements and other powerups as you move along the bottom of the display, returning fire. The clever tricks still abound as well. For example, on one level, you must shoot a bouncing ball which collides with enemies rather than destroy the aliens directly. On another, you have to pump up the invaders with your gunfire. There's never a dull moment as the level designers keep you looking forward to what's next. My only disappointment is that Bugatron Worlds is short. The average gamer can expect to zip through the offering in a couple of hours, making the asking price a bit steep. Still, if you enjoyed the original or just want to play an easy space shooter with a cool retro vibe, Bugatron Worlds is sure to please.
