Devastation Zone Troopers Review

Written by: David Laprad Published: November 7, 2006 You come home from work. You need to unwind. My advice: play Devastation Zone Troopers from CGS Software. DZone is a 3D action game with spectacular graphics and the kind of explosions that will rattle your neighbor's windows. The simplicity of its action recalls Doom: shoot everything that moves. It's just what the doctored ordered. You start each level in a dropship you must navigate through a midair bombardment. This is also your first introduction to the game's third-person perspective and smooth controls. After landing you lay waste to all manner of armored warriors and robotic menaces while blasting a footpath to various waypoints. Between stages you can upgrade your weapons and select the next mission. Action games don't get any simpler (or more cathartic) than DZone. There are a few issues. Enemies show up in vast quantities and respawn endlessly. This wouldn't be a problem except their firepower is overwhelming at times and your character recoils with each hit. (You can choose an easier difficulty setting if you're hitting the reload button too often.) I should also mention the mayhem is best digested in small chunks as its repetitive nature can have a mind-numbing effect. But don't these minor quibbles detract you from playing the best PC action game of 2006.
