Jewels of Cleopatra Review
Written by: David Laprad Published: January 15, 2006 We tend to think of match-three games as a recent innovation. But in Encore's Jewels of Cleopatra we learn ancient Egyptians were as mesmerized with the game mechanic as today's housewives. Archeological evidence uncovered in the game shows the pharaohs filled their pyramids with glittering objects that blocked the path of any would-be tomb robbers. Swapping two of the items to match three or more of them created a footpath to the next chamber by turning the stones beneath them into gold tiles. The rooms increased in size and complexity the deeper the explorer delved. Cleopatra is a well-produced and refreshing new take on an old idea. Treasure chests scattered throughout each level hold tools that allow you to move closer to the exit. Boulders and other objects that require a tool for removal stand in your way. So do spiders that trap you with their webbing and locusts that turn gold tiles back into stone. The best levels are those that challenge you to reach the exit before your nemesis. Arcade bonus games also appear from time to time. If you like match-three games with a twist or love anything to do with ancient Egypt then Jewels of Cleopatra is up your alley.
