Rikki & Mikki: To The Rescue! Review
Published: November 14, 2006 Perhaps I'm old fashioned, but in my day, they didn't let kids have access to high-powered explosives. Then again, we didn't have marauding mummies, rampaging ghosts or murderous hedgerows to deal with, either. In Rikki & Mikki: To The Rescue from Alawar Entertainment, all these threats and more are the order of the day, so we can forgive our two protagonists for carrying around bombs. What's a little self-defense among friends? At its core, Rikki & Mikki is a clone of the classic arcade game, Bomberman. You're presented with a top-down grid of walls and bushes that you need to wind your way through. Your method of travel involves leaving bombs on a short fuse lying near weakened points, blowing them up and passing through. Along the way, you collect gems and coins and avoid or destroy any bad guys that get in your way. It's extremely easy to play, surprisingly complex to master and very easy on the eyes. Aside from a tendency for the levels to be somewhat repetitious, Rikki & Mikki is a near-perfect example of the casual genre: it's an excellent little dose of brain teaser entertainment.
