Strike Ball 2 Deluxe Review
Published: February 20, 2006 There's an almost mystical connection between video games and bricks. We break them, blast them and build with them. Never is this relationship more dynamic than when blocks meet balls, as in Alawar Entertainment's Strike Ball 2 Deluxe. In this brick-busting descendant of the 80's classic, Arkanoid, you're provided with a rocket-powered paddle and charged with keeping a destructive bouncing ball--which looks like a colorful cross between a beach ball and an odor eater--from falling off the bottom of the arena as it obliterates the obstacles placed before it. Rolling back and forth on the table-like arena, the ball crashes into realistic structures made up of Lego-like blocks, shattering them into satisfying, fractal-like shards. Everything in Strike Ball 2 Deluxe drips with bright primary colors, raising the possibility of some mistaking it for a kids-only offering. Don't be fooled. The saturated palette and blocky shapes would surely go over marvelously with children, but Strike Ball 2 Deluxe is no more exclusively tot territory than the original Arkanoid was. It's merely easy on the eyes. Not only does Strike Ball 2 Deluxe look good, it runs smoothly, implements simple mouse controls, and offers dozens of cleverly designed levels to suck up your coffee breaks.
