I love side-scrolling platform games, but they're a rare breed these days, so whenever one comes along, I'm downloading it faster than you can say "Mario!" That's probably what the makers of Supercow said when they were tossing around ideas for a new game. Instead of controlling an Italian plumber, though, you play a cow that sets out to save his farm animal friends from an evil Professor. Just like Mario, however, you'll run and jump your way through a variety of levels, collecting coins and powerups, and stomping on the heads of various enemies. The latter include dogs and other pesky critters, all of which are modeled in 3D.

If you're looking for a challenge, Supercow might be too easy for you. There aren't any difficult moves to learn, and although secret areas abound, it's unlikely you'll get lost, as most of the levels are laid out in a very clear-cut manner. The only test of your skills will come when you have to time your leaps from cloud to cloud just right, as they tend to disappear while you're on them. There isn't any in-game help, but as you can see, you probably won't need it. Given all this simplicity, you'll fill your trophy room in no time, either for collecting all of the goodies on a level or for bumping off every enemy.

My only real objection about Supercow has to do with the use of 3D characters against 2D backdrops. Stylistically, they don't look good together, as the game's characters seem out of place in the gorgeous, sprite-filled world through which they travel. But young players won't mind, and they seem to be the ones for whom this game was made. So download Supercow and milk all the fun out of it you can before turning it over to your youngsters.
